Linux Video Streaming
Video Streaming is also available for Linux end users. Streaming refers to media being delivered constantly (hence the name) from a provider over the web. The name is taken from the delivery method and not the medium itself. This function is constantly used by telecommunication providers. Live streaming means broadcasting the media live through the internet. Currently a popular way of interaction, Live stream functions for television and video purposes.
A Linux video application or media player, such as VLC, can stream videos and can also work as a Linux video streaming server. Meaning that it can broadcast media through the web. Most Linux streaming and encoding tools are completely free, and they are easy to set up. In less than an hour, one could have streaming server serving a dozen of video clips.
MPlayer is also a Linux application and Multi-platform application that can work as a streaming server and video player at the same time. For a end-user to be able to see what's being broadcasted is necessary that they have installed the appropriate codecs in their player and whatever is broadcasted can be, very well, picked up by users on different operating systems.
Contrary to popular belief, a super computer is not required to successfully perform video streaming on Linux.
